The Executive Committee is responsible for overseeing the activities of the CFAR Cores and Research Domains, with evaluating Core performance on an annual basis, and with approving funding decisions for developmental awards and resource allocation for projects and CFAR Cores.
The Internal Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC) has two major purposes: To develop, propose, and review annual goals for each of the five CFAR Research Domains and to propose a set of science Cores and Core activities best capable of facilitating the accomplishment of those goals. The ISAC is composed of five subcommittees, one for each Research Domain:
Research Domain directors are responsible for chairing ISAC subcommittee meetings and for assisting the Executive Committee in shaping the scientific direction of the Emory CFAR.
CFAR Core leadership, Core Directors and Associate Directors, are responsible for the day-to-day operation of their Cores. Core leaders also work closely with Administrative and Developmental Core staff to sponsor CFAR education, training and mentoring activities.
The External Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) provides annual, independent outside review of the Emory CFAR's strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. Members of the ESAC are appointed by the Executive Committee based on their expertise in one or more of the five Emory CFAR research domains.
The Emory CFAR Developmental Core utilizes internal and external peer reviewers to determine priority scores for Developmental Core applications. This NIH-like process provides extensive "pink sheet" feedback to junior investigators who prepare applications using the NIH 398 format. The CFAR Scientific Review Group is a group of ad hoc study sections which, under the direction of Dr. Dennis Liotta (Developmental Core Director and CFAR Associate Director for Drug Discovery and Investigator Development) and Dr. Kimberly Hagen (Developmental Core Associate Director and CFAR Assistant Director for Program), evaluate research applications received by the Core. A given CFAR study section is convened after the breadth and focus of that Study Section's necessary expertise is determined.
The CAB assists in the recruitment of subjects into HIV/AIDS research by providing assistance to investigators on the design of recruitment methods and materials and assists outreach efforts of the Emory CFAR by providing annual advice to the Executive Committee about seminars, workshops, and other activities that will help bridge the "town / gown" divide.
