"What a tragedy to lose to terrorism so many who made it their life's work to care about humanity."
- Former VDC member Seema Yasman

(On the July 17 deaths of Joep Lange, Jacqueline van Tongeren, Glenn Thomas, Lucie van Mens, Martine de Schutter, and Pim de Kuijer in the explosion of Malaysia flight 17 over the Ukraine)

Joep Lange Obituary
Abstract of Joep's most recently published paper

"Why is it that we are always talking about the problem of drug distribution, when there is virtually no place in Africa where one cannot get a cold beer or a cold Coca-Cola?"
- Joep Lange
(During a plenary talk at IAS 2002 (Barcelona, Spain) that is credited with helping to garner global will to expand ARV rollouts in Africa)

“People like Joep and Jacqueline change the course of epidemics. They force us to look at ourselves and figure out what we can do better. Without them, we will have to work harder. ... I asked him once why HE worked so much. 'Do you know how much it costs to buy shoes for five girls?' I recall him saying. Joep was a doting father. On global conference calls he would discuss strategies to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Africa while cooking dinner for his kids. The sound of clanging pots and pans in his kitchen could be heard by scientists and doctors around the world."
- Seema Yasman
