     Neela Goswami

... to Neela Goswami on scoring her very first NIH funding!

Neela is using "A Geospatial Approach to Target HIV-infected Populations Engaged in Care" to define the geographic space and social environment of HIV-infected persons with poor linkage to care. She hopes that data from the project will to aid the design and implementation of geospatial-informed community-based interventions in future R01 studies.

Happy Birthday

... to Juanita Curran (August 11); Craig Sineath (August 12); Adam Vaughan (August 13); Alfonso Hernandez-Romieu, AD McNaghten and Stanley Marcus (August 14); Neale Weitzmann (August 15); Eric Hunter (August 18); Adam Carpenter (August 24), Carlos del Rio (August 28), Jan Mead (August 30), and Max Cooper (August 31).

There are two great days in a person's life - the day we are born and the day we discover why (William Barclay).
May your own discoveries continue making the world a better place for the rest of us!

     Arina Kovalenkov

And speaking of birthdays ... Galina Turbova and Yevgeniy Kovalenkov are proud to sponsor the application of our newest CFAR member, Arina Jane Kovalenkov; born August 9th, 6:40 pm, at Emory University Hospital Midtown (7 lb, 2 oz; 19"). Arina is home now and sleeping, well, like a baby. (Translation: Way better than her parents are). Mom and Dad profess to be working really hard to adjust to this new life and LOVING it! Arina has not yet declared her research interests although she is showing early talent in operant conditioning.

David Guidot     Lou Ann Brown     Paul Spearman

David Guidot knows all about the mechanisms by which alcohol and HIV can make your lungs susceptible to injury (5I01BX000745-04). Lou Ann Brown has extensive expertise in pulmonary pathologies associated with chronic oxidative stress and Paul Spearman is writing the book on the nature of the intracellular virus-containing compartment in human macrophages. So what happens when you assemble this power trio of researchers in one NIH application? New funding from NIH/NHLBI to examine "HIV-induced Redox Stress and the Alveolar Macrophage as a Resistant Reservoir", that's what.

New items added to CDC's HIV Web site:

2013 Annual Report: Turning the Tide on HIV:
Overview of activities conducted and supported by the CDC Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention

National Health Statistics Report: Sexual Orientation and Health Among U.S. Adults: National Health Interview Survey, 2013
From the CDC website: "For the first time in its 57-year history, the 2013 National Health Interview Survey included a measure of sexual orientation and provided a national estimate for indicators of health-related behaviors, health status, health care service utilization, and health care access by sexual orientation. Data from 34,557 adults showed that 96.6% of adults identified as straight, 1.6% identified as gay or lesbian, and 0.7% identified as bisexual. The remaining 1.1% of adults identified as "something else," stated "I don’t know the answer," or refused to provide an answer. Significant differences were found in health-related behaviors, health status, health care service utilization, and health care access among U.S. adults aged 18–64 who identified as straight, gay or lesbian, or bisexual."

Jane Kelly gave a presentation addressing the HIV Care Continua at a meeting of the Georgia Board of Public Health on August 12

Does Teamwork Pay?
Drs. Guidot, Brown, and Spearman were recently funded (see above) under a Multiple PI policy that NIH began implementing in 2006. Does that make YOU want to pull together a red hot team of investigators and put in a dual/treble PI application? That would, of course, only make sense if your chances of funding were not decreased by submitting a multi-PI application. Are they?
Check out this Rock Talk article for the data. (Spoiler alert: Go for it!)
