Divider Rule Food Metaphor of the Week ...

"I hope you're hungry, because it's time to go out there and swallow the world. That's a great big meal and you'll need a big appetite. ... Because, there it is, out there, the grand and appalling human reality — its elation, its despondency, its danger, its dentistry. Be greedy for it. Grab great handfuls of it and stuff it in your pockets, your mouths, or wherever you most like stuffing things."

--Salman Rushdie, to Emory's graduating class of 2015

Divider Rule Kudos ...

Kehmia Titanji

... to the Emory University Research Committee (URC) for investing in the career of Kehmia Titanji (Instructor, SOM/Medicine) by providing her first funding in HIV/AIDS research! With support from the CFAR Immunology and Clinical Cores, Kehmia will investigate the possibility that Zoledronic Acid (ZA) can show as much talent for calming down misbehaving B cells (who have a lot to answer for in the damage they cause through systemic inflammation) as ZA has always had for preventing bone fractures in mice and men.

     Paula Frew

... to the steering committee of the Early Career Prevention Network (ECPN) of the Society for Prevention Research for awarding Paula Frew (Asst. Professor (SOM/Medicine) their 2015 ECPN John B. Reid Early Career Award in recognition of her impressive and ongoing contributions to advancing the field of prevention science in HIV/AIDS.

Joshua Strauss

... to the Fans of CFAR who pushed Josh Strauss's cryo-electron image over the top in voting for the Office of Postdoc Education's "Best Image 2015" award. He won!!

But wait, there's more! Josh ALSO recently received notice of his first ever NIH funding. Josh's F32 funding is for the 'Structural analysis of tetherin-mediated HIV restriction' (1F32GM112517-01). Congratulations to Josh!

Happy Birthday

... to Melissa Bothwell (May 11), Jeb Jones (May 15), Donna Hess (May 15), Martha Rogers (May 16) and Cindy Gaillard (May 17)

Another year, another fabulous excuse for eating cake.

     Raymond Schinazi

The most recent issue of Science includes a really interesting Jon Cohen article titled "King of the Pills." It is a feature story about CFAR's HIV Reservoirs and Eradication SWG Director, Raymond Schinazi. As Raymond said when passing the link along: "The saga continues. The last chapter has not been written yet. It will be the best." We have no doubt about that!

Drenna Waldrop-Valverde     Becky Gary

Everyone knows that exercise is good for you, right? Of course they do. The problem, as SEATEC's Felicia Guest likes to say, isn't that it is hard to know what to do, it's just hard to do what you know. But with new funding from NIH NINR, "Healing Hearts, Mending Minds in Older Persons with HIV" (1R01NR014973-01), Drenna Waldrop-Valverde and Becky Gary are out to objectively measure whether changing that through a home-based aerobic exercise intervention can have a positive impact on the cardiovascular and neurocognitive function of people aging with HIV.

And the cherry on top? The R01 is based partly on funding that Becky received through a Developmental Core mechanism to bring senior scientists into AIDS research.
