Divider Rule Greeting of the Season ...

L'shanah Tovah y'all!

Divider Rule Kudos ...
     Adam Vaughan

... to Adam Vaughan on scoring his first ever NIH funding!

When asked why he robbed banks, Willie Sutton famously replied "Because that's where the money is." Aided by the CFAR Prevention Science Core, Adam's PhD research on Assessing HIV Risk and Prevention Locations Among MSM (F31MH107343-01) will use spatial analysis to map out and examine a variation of the same principal -- i.e. that people's prevention and risk behaviors may be intrinsically connected to the spaces and places they frequent.

Carlos del Rio

... and to NIH for tapping Carlos del Rio to serve two more years as Chair of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) AIDS Research Review Committee. In this role Carlos will continue to oversee review of HIV/AIS grant proposals and contracts submitted to NIAID and to advise NIH leadership on NIAID program activities.

Happy Birthday

... to Dick Compans (September 15), Jim Curran (September 16), Frank Wong (September 16), Selwyn Hurwitz (September 18), Kirk Easley (September 20), and Rana Chakraborty (September 22)

Its your birthday, we wish you many more; health and wealth and friends by the score. So cut the cake and let's eat some more! -- Happy Birthday to you.

     Ann Chahroudi

Last week we celebrated the fact that Ann Chahroudi received her first NIH funding. What we failed to mention is that this funding is coming via the R56 mechanism, which underwrites "highly meritorious applications that ... would be missed opportunities if not funded. Interim funding ends when the applicant succeeds in obtaining an R01 or other competing award built on the R56." Ann's award is one of only two R56 grants that Emory received in 2015.

Patrick Sullivan

Patrick Sullivan has U01 funding (1U01PS004977-01) to develop a set of new HIV prevention messages for MSM that is grounded in our evolving understanding of the need to combine biomedical and behavioral prevention. Patrick will use a mobile messaging intervention to test the new messages and provide links between targeted prevention services and service access points in Atlanta, Detroit, and New York. Can you hear me now?

Say it ain't so! NIH's Deputy Director for Extramural Research, Sally Rockey's excellent blog "Rock Talk" closed up shop on 9/11/15. This blog gave an unprecedented look under the hood at how NIH operates and, as Dr. Rockey says in her final posting, it gave her a chance to listen just as much as to talk: "I can hands down tell you that the biosketch, the emeritus award and the end of the A2 were the three policy discussions that generated the most comments, both positive and negative. But in all three cases, we made modifications based on the input from you."
