Divider Rule Map of the Week ...
     US Map

See map* at right. As you can clearly see, it turns out that Atlanta is actually in Louisiana, right next to East Virginia and directly south of Wyoming.

Who knew?

P.S. Keep an eye on Canada -- it looks to be heading our way.

*This is one of the submissions after 15 Londoners were asked to label a map of the United States.

Divider Rule Kudos ...
     Ann Chahroudi

... to Ann Chahroudi on scoring her first NIH R01!

This is what we know about HIV ... CD8+ T cells can control HIV replication, even in the absence of antiretroviral therapy (ART), but they don't eradicate it. Intruigingly though, CD8+ cells appear to act in concert with ART to maintain virus suppression (at least in SIV-infected rhesus macaques).

How do they DO that?

The new R01 (1R01AI125064-01) on which Ann Chahroudi and Guido Silvestri are serving as MPIs, is designed to crack exactly that nut. Their project will use a series of experiments to determine if the observed antiviral effect of CD8+ lymphocytes under ART is mediated by CD8+ T cells or CD8+ NK cells, which could be foundational to developing therapies capable of turbocharging the CD8+ lymphocyte response in ART-treated humans.

World TB Day Update!

Our Network News special edition summary of CFAR's contributions to tuberculosis research failed to mention that Cheryl Day
is the co-Program Director, with Jyothi Rengarajon, of a TBRU subproject that is seeking to identify the human Mtb-specific T cell signatures that are associated with the control or elminiation of MTB infection in humans (7780).

Jyothi Rengarajan

Another World TB Day Update!

Jyothi Rengarajan has taken over as Program Director for the TBRU subproject (7784) that Francois Villinger was described in the Network News special supplement as co-directing. That project will identify the immune signatures associated with control of Mtb infection as latent infection, either spontaneously or upon therapy, in rhesus macaques.

Recruiter Sought: Exercise Study
Drenna Waldrop-Valverde has an R01 on exercise to improve cognitive function in people with HIV (R01NR014973) that needs to ramp up enrollment so they are hoping to expand their recruiting team. People who know the Grady system would be ideal but they'd be willing to train someone who is unfamiliar with Grady.
Contact Dr. Waldrop-Valverde for more information

The CFAR does not receive any financial support from the AV200 bike ride but anything that supports AIDS vaccine research helps the CFAR and AV200 is a major, major source of support for AIDS vaccine research.
