All in a Day
Divider Rule Kudos ...

... to Friends of CFAR everywhere for making the CFAR's dreams come true.

     Thank You

When CFAR was selected to be a targeted recipient for Emory's first ever "All In A Day" campaign we Dreamed Big -- or so we thought -- with Jim, Carlos, Eric, and Kimbi each committing to contributing matching funds in a challenge to attract at least 24 donors in 24 hours. BUT because of all of your support we ended up with 246 donors in 24 hours!!

This turns out to have been the 4th largest number of donors among all 24 groups participating in the campaign, with only Emory College, the Rollins School of Public Health, and the Candler School of Theology bringing in more donors than we did. And those three, by the way, are SCHOOLS (read: vast numbers of faculty, staff, students, and alumni from which to draw). We also scored some extra dollars from the campaign by having the largest number of donors during one "Challenge" hour AND we ended up coming in 9th overall in total dollar amount raised. Wowser!

Nina Martinez

The Atlanta City Council voted on Jan 17 to confirm Nina Martinez' appointment, thru 2020, to Atlanta's Human Relations Commission. This will help turbocharge Nina's efforts to ensure a standard of non-discrimination for people with HIV in Atlanta.

Oodles of CFARians came to either RSPH and/or Glenn Memorial last week to hear Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS and Undersecretary-general of the United Nations, talk one-on-one about the importance of social justice in engaging nations in a global response to HIV but only a very few had a chance to hear Wendy Armstrong talk to Executive Director Sidibé about the importance of social capital in engaging people with HIV in care.

Thanks to Carlos del Rio and his handy cell phone though, you can count yourself among that number....

Divider Rule Focus On... CFAR-series Application Preparation Seminar

Focus On...
Find Funding

Attention Junior Faculty:
Are you interested in applying for CFAR-series
(CFAR-03; CFAR-C; CFAR-K) funding at either of the next two Emory CFAR Developmental Core application deadlines (May 1, 2017; November 1, 2017)? If yes, keep reading!

The CFAR Developmental Core will be offering a two-part CFAR-series application preparation workshop on March 14 and March 21, 2017
11:00am – 1:00 pm. Instructor: Developmental Core Associate Director Kimbi Hagen

What will be covered?
The seminar will include didactic presentation, discussion, and Q&A. Participants will receive access to examples of successful CFAR applications and hands-on guidance for completing the various sections.

Significant time will be devoted to the strategy for preparing a successful CFAR-series application (e.g., building a mentored research team, negotiating support from the CFAR science cores, creating your slides and talk outline for your pre-submission presentation to the CFAR Core Directors, preparing your "Future Plans for NIH Research" statement, writing a strong specific aims page, developing a scope of work in keeping with the time-limited nature of a CFAR-funded project, addressing scientific rigor and reproducibility in your Approach section, etc).

Time permitting, Dr. Hagen will provide individual read and review of your biosketch and/or CFAR one-page pre-proposal.

Who should attend?
This series is open to all individuals who are eligible to apply for a CFAR-series award. This includes Research Track or Tenure Track full time faculty with an appointment at Emory University or Morehouse School of Medicine who meet the definition of an NIH "New Investigator" in HIV/AIDS. (i.e. NIH independent investigators are still eligible, but only if their funding has not been in HIV/AIDS).

Priority will be given to applicants intending to submit a new or resubmission grant proposal at the May 1, 2017 deadline but applicants intending to submit or resubmit an application for the November 1, 2017 deadline are welcome as well. We have learned from experience that early planning is a key to success.
