Divider Rule Listicle of the Week ...

Even if you weren't born here you have earned the right to call Atlanta your home if you:

• Know that there is only one right way to say "Ponce de Leon," "Houston Mill," and "DeKalb," no matter WHAT those people from Spain, Texas, and Chicago say;

• Accept that "Y'all" is a word (Extra points if you also know that "Y'all" is singular and "All Y'all" is plural);

• Have been to a wedding in which the father of the bride was listening to the UGA football game through ear buds during the service;

• Scoff at your non-Georgia relatives and friends when they dare to complain about "pollen season;"

• Have heard (or, for extra points, have participated in) a conversation like this one:
    • "Can I get you a Coke?"
    • "Yes"
    • "What kind?
    • "Either Pepsi or Dr. Pepper is fine"
    • "OK"

• Know where the following grocery stores are or used to be: The Murder Kroger, the Kosher Kroger, the Disco Kroger, the Star Trek Kroger, the Stinky Kroger, and the Zombie Kroger.

      Eric Hunter

... to the School of Medicine AGAIN.

Hard on the heels of last week's annoncement that a CFARian won the Paul B. Beeson MD Faculty Recognition Award, THIS week we have the distinct pleasure of announcing that Eric Hunter has been awarded the 2018 SOM Dean's Distinguished Faculty Lecture and Award.
See you at the talk on 4/4.

Max Cooper

... And to the country of Japan for selecting Max Cooper as a 2018 Japan Prize Laureate for his discovery of the dual nature of adaptive immunity!

This year's Prize was awarded to Dr. Akira Yoshino (left) for his significant contributions to the development of lithium ion batteries, and jointly to Max and Dr. Jacques Miller (right) for the establishment of the basic concepts underlying modern immunology.

Happy Birthday

... to Ling Yue (2/6), Alexandra Ricca (2/12), and Jeremy Grey (2/13)

Better stock up on cake and ice cream now, you have 584 million miles around the sun to go before we celebrate your birthday again.

Paula Frew

Just as the number of people in rural Appalachia who inject drugs is rising exponentially, so is the concurrent need for HIV/HCV/HBV prevention interventions delivered through Syringe Service Programs (SSP).

What is the current availability of HIV/HCV/HBV prevention services through SSP interventions in Appalachia? Do SSP clients believe they need these services? What barriers and facilitators affect access to HIV/HCV/HBV prevention through SSP programs? Paula Frew has recently received funding from Research Support Services Inc to study this.

      Neel Gandhi

Just when you thought that it couldn't get any worse, the long-standing HIV epidemic in South Africa has been overtaken by a concurrent, highly deadly epidemic of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR TB).

But where is the TB coming from???

Having shown that the majority of new cases can not be traced to close contacts or healthcare provision, Neel Gandhi is using new funding (1R01AI138646-01) to do a geospatial, genomic, and social network study of the role of casual contact and migration in driving the epidemic.
