... to Ruxana Sadikot (Professor, Medicine/Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care) on scoring her first NIH R01.
Congratulations Ruxana!!

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of death in people with well controlled HIV. Ruxana and Co-PI David Guidot's project is examining a newly discovered mechanism by which HIV is able to interfere with lung immune responses, even in the face of highly effective antiretroviral therapy.

Their project -- How HIV-related proteins increase the susceptibility to lung injury despite anti-retroviral therapy -- will test novel treatments in an HIV-1 transgenic mouse model with the goal of eventually translating these studies to clinical trials aimed at enhancing pulmonary immune function in people with HIV.

Bert Anderson received new NIH funding in July 2018 for R21MH118092.

Growing evidence shows that the central nervous system (CNS) is one of the viral reservoir sites that enables HIV to evade eradication. However, more evidence is needed from live humans to better understand this reservoir, including its size and its characteristics that may differ from the T-lymphocyte reservoir.

Bert's R21 - Viral immunocapture and isolation of virus from CSF lymphoid and myeloid cells to better understand HIV in CNS -- hopes to bring the field closer to a full understanding of the HIV CNS reservoir and, if successful, could provide a roadmap for HIV eradication therapies targeting both myeloid and T-lymphocyte populations in the CNS.

Part Time Helper Sought:
Community Farmers Market
The Community Farmers Market at the Grant Park Market is looking to hire someone part time who would work the full Grant Park Market (7am-2pm on Sundays). Pays is about $10 per hour, and it is really fun, you just hang out at the market and help with set up/take down and various tasks.
