      Hannah Cooper

Hannah Cooper received new NIH funding in May 2018 for R01DA046197.

Even as the rapid and unabated rise in drug overdoses (OD) is getting a lot of attention in the media and beyond, policy makers have routinely missed opportunities to develop the evidence base needed to address OD in people who inject drugs, even though that has become the leading cause of death in IDUs.

Hannah's R01 - Developing the Evidence Base for Overdose Policies: A Multilevel Analysis of National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Data -- aims to fix that.

Specifically, Hannah's study will analyze individual-level data on ~38,800 injecting drug users across the country to learn whether and how specific drug- and health-related laws (i.e., Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs, Naloxone Access Laws, Good Samaritan Laws, Medicaid Expansion, and Medical Marijuana Laws) and place characteristics (e.g., spatial access to substance use disorder treatment) relate to a variety of OD-related outcomes among injecting drug users, overall and by race/ethnicity, gender, age, and HIV status.

If successful, Hannah's findings will provide some of the first evidence to help develop laws and place-based interventions to combat ODs among injecting drug users, a growing and yet neglected population at the epicenter of the US OD epidemic.
