Conversations with Claire

... to Emory University for implementing "Conversations with Claire," a video series in which (CFARian) President Claire Sterk talks with global leaders.

    Jim Curran

In the 2nd episode of Conversations with Claire, she talks with NIH/NIAID Director Tony Fauci when the two of them and Jim Curran were all in Aspen to sit on a panel ("Eliminating HIV: Progress, Possibilities, and Roadblocks") at the 2019 Aspen Ideas: Health festival.

    DeKalb County map

... And to the CDC for awarding DeKalb County $1.5M in funding as part of the White House's Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative.

DeKalb County is one of three CDC pilot sites across the country that will test the implementation of strategies to end the epidemic.

Beginning July 1 the Georgia Department of Public Health began a program that will spend 6 months working with the DeKalb County Board of Public Health to expand HIV testing, promote the use of PrEP, link HIV+ persons to care, and retain them in care.

This is a periodic celebration of new research awarded while Network News was on extended hiatus.

(Belated) Kudos to Deanna Kulpa for receiving her FIRST NIH funding in September 2018 for R01AI143414 (CD8 T Cell Supression OF HIV Latency Establishment and Maintenance in Virally Suppressed Individuals).

The immune system itself seems to play a role in silencing viral expression, triggering HIV latency. Furthermore, there is intriguing evidence that CD8+ cells may be key players in that process. Deanna's project will will seek to define the mechanisms by which CD8+ lymphocytes promote HIV latency in ART-treated HIV- infected individuals with a goal of identifying and evaluating therapeutic strategies to counteract these mechanisms. If successful, her findings will constitute the basis for the design of clinical studies aimed at eradication HIV.

Abstract Deadline Extended to July 23:
2019 Inter-CFAR Women and HIV Symposium
October 21-22, 2019 (Chicago)

The goal of the Inter-CFAR Women and HIV Symposium is to identify gaps in knowledge in HIV and women's research and develop strategies that will move the field forward. In order to accomplish this goal, we aim to generate collaborative activity between CFARs and other research networks, highlighting cutting edge science and promoting opportunities for early career investigators.

Abstracts are being solicited for posters and oral presentations related to all areas of HIV among women including prevention, treatment, and cure.

The review committee will prioritize abstracts submitted by junior and mid-level investigators, including pre-doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows, and through the Assistant Professor level. Abstracts must be no more than 350 words in length. Review criteria include overall impact, contribution to the field of HIV in women, and responsiveness to NIH Office of AIDS Research Priorities.

Registration for the Symposium will open in late July. Some travel support will be available based on need.
There will be no registration fee.

Abstract Submission (deadline July 23)

Mentoring Moment

NIH grant applications include two documents that, if your project is funded, are made available online to the general public via the NIH RePORTER website. These are:
• Project Summary / Abstract
• Project Narrative

The shared purpose of these two documents is to help the public understand the value of NIH-funded research.

Unsure about what should go in each of these documents?
Check out this table to see how these two documents compare and what to include in each one.
