Heat Dome 2019

During the time last week that we all spent living under the Heat Dome, Atlanta was actually COOLER than Chicago, Columbia, Columbus, Des Moines, Detroit, Kansas City, Memphis, New York, Oklahoma City, Raleigh, Nashville, AND Washington DC.

... And to Valeria Cantos for receiving a highly competitive two year training and research award from the nation-wide funding mechanism, CFAR Adelante for her project "Development of a Comprehensive HIV Prevention App for Latino MSM!"

In addition to herself, Valeria's CFAR Adelante team will include CFAR mentor Aaron Siegler and collaborating community partner Humberto Orozco from Atlanta's Latino LinQ.

Adelante means "onward" in Spanish and, through CFAR Adelante, the NIH trains early-career investigators who focus on HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention and care in the Latino/Hispanic community. The Adelante program is jointly administered by the DC CFAR (pre-award) and the Emory CFAR (post-award), Kimbi Hagen serves as Program Officer for the national mechanism.

Using her Adelante award, Valeria's team will develop a culturally-responsive HIV prevention app for Latino MSM, using the existing app Healthmindr as a base platform. The team will assess participant preferences, develop and adjust the app's functions through theater testing to produce a final app, and pilot test it to evaluate its acceptability and usability.

Emory CFAR at IAS 2019

The 10th International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science (#IAS2019) wraps up on Wednesday.

The Emory CFAR was very well represented this year with a total of 45 Emory University-affiliated presentations — including 18 talks and 27 poster presentations — representing the work of 101 CFARians.

CFARians who had three or more posters and/or oral presentations included: Ann Chahroudi (4), Carlos del Rio (7), Sophia Hussen (4), Travis Sanchez (3), Guido Silvestri (5), and Patrick Sullivan (5).

Congrats to all presenters and co-authors!!

This is a periodic celebration of new research awarded while Network News was on extended hiatus.

      Neel Gandhi

(Belated) congratulations to Neel Gandhi for receiving not one but TWO NIH R01 awards in 2018!

As a reminder, a horrible epidemic of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR TB) has converged with the long-standing HIV epidemic in South Africa to make things very grim there. To make matters even worse, the development of new vaccines and therapeutics to prevent TB acquisition have been hampered by a lack of understanding of the mechanisms that allow humans to resist infection from it. Neel's back to back R01s are designed to address both issues.

Neel's first award (R01AI138646) is looking at the role that casual contact and migration play in the transmission of XDR TB in South Africa. His previous research has demonstrated that transmission is driving the spread of XDR TB even though the majority of this transmission can not be traced to either close contacts or healthcare-associated transmission. In this project, a CONTEXT (Casual Contact and Migration in XDR TB) study is integrating geospatial, genomic, and social network data to comprehensively characterize the contributions of casual contact and migration to XDR TB transmission.

Yan Sun

With his second award, (R01AI139406), Neel and Co-PI Yan Sun are looking at what it takes to successfully resist infection with TB by characterizing the extent of TB exposure and TB test results for 4,000 household contacts of patients diagnosed with active pulmonary TB and then comparing the genetic and metabolomic profiles of contacts who were highly exposed, but resisted infection, with those of contacts who became infected. Now in its second year, this work is helping to identify mechanisms associated with resistance to TB infection.
