Divider Rule Kudos ...

      Erica Johnson
    Erica Johnson

Major Kudos to Erica Johnson on scoring her very first NIH funding. And its an R01 to boot (R01HD097843)!

Even with optimal adherence, maternal antiretroviral therapy reduces, but does not eliminate vertical transmission of HIV. Why is that? One potential answer may be found in maternal co-infections during pregnancy.

In conjunction with project MPI Rana Chakraborty, Erica will examine How Maternal HCMV Facilitates In Utero Transmission of HIV and Impacts the Developing Fetal Immune System During Gestation in order to develop a deeper conceptual understanding of mechanisms that impact the developing fetal immune system and promote HIV transmission.

If successful, study findings will contribute towards the development of specific antiviral therapies to further reduce MTCT of HIV and improve clinical outcomes in HIV-exposed infants globally.
