Front & Center ... Christina Gavegnano

     Christina Gavegnano
     Christina Gavegnano

Has Christina Gavegnano cracked the code on curing COVID-19?

One of the most frightening aspects of infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is its tendency to launch a cytokine storm that can power an out-of-control inflammatory respose which can, in all too many people so far, prove fatal.

Enter Christina. With the CFAR's help, Christina has spent years exploring the mechanism by which Baricitinib, a Jak inhibitor on which she shares an international patent, can reduce inflammation and -- among other things -- reverse HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.

Now it seems that one of the "other things" Baricitinib can do might include saving lives by taming the SARS-CoV-2 cytokine storm!

Early tests with Baricitinib look so promising that out of more than 25 potential anti-COVID agents, the NIH chose Christina's drug to star in a partnered NIH/Lilly-sponsored 63 country international phase 3 study for COVID-19 treatment for which Vince Marconi is a key investigator.

Yay for Christina, Vince, and Team CFAR!!
