How many balls is it necessary to juggle at one time during the COVID-19 pandemic?

A lot, as we are all discovering.

In Sophia Husssen's case, these include child care, homeschooling, taking care of hospitalized patients, doing telemedicine appointments with all her other patients, teaching (online these days) a class at RSPH on International Infectious Disease, and doing research.
A lot of research.

Sophia is currently in the second year of an R34 (R34MH116805) for iTransition: Developing and Pilot Testing a Multileval Technology-based Intervention to Support Youth Living with HIV from Adolescent to Adult Care.

She is also about half way through a one year NIH CFAR Administrative "Ending the Epidemic" Supplement (2019-2020) for Exploring HIV and Mental Health Care Integration for Young Black MSM and has recently been competitively selected to submit for another NIH CFAR Administrative Supplement (2020-2021), this one on Methamphetamine Use and HIV Outcomes Among Black Gay Men who are Transplants to Atlanta.

And that is all before her brand new NIH funding (R21MH121164) for Sociocultural Influences on Mental Health Service Utilization for Young Black Gay, Bisexual, and Other MSM.

Whew!!

Jessica Sales and Ameeta Kalokhe have just scored new NIH R01 funding together.

Their project (R01MH121962), is looking at An Implementation Science Study of Violence Screening Practices Among Ryan White-funded Sites in the Southeastern US.

The high prevalence of violence (i.e. intimate partner violence, child abuse, community violence) experienced by many people with HIV can interfere with retention in care and threaten HIV viral suppression.

In this project Jessica and Ameeta will assess the needs and practices around systematic violence screening and interventions in Ryan White Clinics and AIDS Service Organizations.

Their work will ultimately inform the development of evidence- based violence screening protocols and a proof-of-concept violence support model that leverages existing local Ryan White Clinic and AIDS Service Organization infrastructure to address psychosocial consequences of violence among people with HIV.
