Front & Center ... Cecile Lahiri

School of Medicine Assistant Professor (Infectious Disease) Cecile Lahiri, is a Co-Investigator with the Emory Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) and the recently appointed Director of Research Development for the Emory Specialized Center of Research Excellence in Sex Differences (SCORE).

Her research focuses on antiretroviral therapy in the context of HIV cure and eradication, co-morbidities, toxicities, and side effects, with a specific interest in the impact of biological sex on each of these.

Cecile's current NIH funding -- Defining Antiretroviral Pharmacology within HIV-1 Reservoirs of Males and Females (K23AI124913), which she turbocharged with a CFAR-K pilot award (Exploring Sex Differences in Suspected HIV-1 Reservoirs), reflects that interest.

The work that Cecile is doing to determine exactly how HIV antiretroviral regimens differ in their effect on men and women has major implications for understanding potential sex differences in the efficacy and effects of HIV treatment and cure strategies.

Kudos ...

     Kristin Harrington
     Kristin Harrington

... to PhD student Kristin Harrington on having scored her very first NIH funding (F30AI152342) for: INVESTIGATING TRANSMISSION RISK AND INCIDENCE OF EXTENSIVELY DRUG-RESISTANT TUBERCULOSIS IN SOUTH AFRICA .

Really scary factoid: Tuberculosis (TB) kills >4,000 people each and every single day (totalling 1.5M/year).

Recent evidence suggests that TB is primarily transmitted through casual contact (brief interactions in the community) but there are huge gaps in knowledge about where those interactions occur.

Enter Kristin.
Under the mentorship of her NIH F30 sponsor Neel Gandhi and co-sponsor Lance Waller, Kristin will use epidemiological, biostatistical, and geospatial approaches to better understand transmission dynamics and identify where infections are occurring. If successful, her findings will be a major driver in more effectively targeting TB prevention strategies.

     Aneesh Mehta
     Aneesh Mehta

Emory University is the largest site in the world for NIH's clinical trial of the SARS-CoV-2 antiviral drug, Remdesivir. With promising results, the study shows that use of this intravenous drug given to hospitalized patients can slow the virus from spreading and that patients who received Remdesivir recovered 31% faster.

In a May 12, 2020 online presentation -- A Glimmar of Hope for Coronavirus Patients -- Aneesh Mehta shared preliminary findings on this important study and discussed the next steps in analyzing this and other antiviral drugs used to treat COVID-19 patients.
