... to the Emory Team who led the enrollment of more patients (n=103) into the Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial (ACTT) than any of the other 67 sites around the world. ACTT is a NIAID-funded clinical trial of the COVID-19 drug Remdesivir (NCT04280705).

According to preliminary data from ACTT, hospitalized people with advanced COVID-19 and lung involvement who received Remdesivir recovered faster than similar people who received placebo, making it the new standard of care for patients hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2.

Patrick Sullivan      Nadine Rouphael

Back in 2014 Patrick Sullivan and Eli Rosenberg received R01 funding (R01DA038196) to develop a prospective cohort study of 300 HIV-negative young black MSM in Atlanta. A lot of interesting results came out of that study
(check it out here).

During that study they offered PrEP as part of a comprehensive package of prevention interventions.

Good News: Over 40% of cohort participants initiated PrEP

Bad News: Almost 40% of the men who initiated PrEP discontinued it before the study was over.

Worse News: Even with 44% PrEP uptake in the cohort, HIV incidence remained high at 6.2%/year. New STI diagnoses remained high as well.

Great News: Patrick Sullivan and Colleen Kelley have just received new R01 funding to look at Parrying the Pitfalls of PrEP: Preventing Premature PrEP Discontinuation and STIs Among Young Black MSM (R01MH122341).

This new study will continue the cohort approach but will also add three new interventions:
(1) An innovative "early warning" system to identify YBMSM on PrEP who are at risk for discontinuing PrEP, and then provide a motivational interviewing-based peer intervention.

(2) On-demand PrEP offered to men who decline daily PrEP or who plan to stop daily PrEP because they are unwilling to take a daily pill or perceive their risks to be infrequent.

(3) STI PEP with doxycycline offered to all men, regardless of PrEP use, to avert new STIs.

Mentoring Moment... NIH-sponsored Small group Discussions on Microaggressions & Incivility

     Mentoring Moment...

From Sharon Milgram (NIH OHITE):
Have you been on the receiving end of unkind language, bullying and microaggressions?

Or have you witnessed someone in your group treated with disrespect?

Have you ever found yourself unsure of what to say, either in the moment or after the fact?

Perhaps you are a mentor and want to learn how to support your trainees when they report incivility to you?

Or you plan to become a physician, a teacher, the head of a research group, or play another important role in healthcare or research?

Regardless of where you are now and where you want to be in the future, we all need practice and discussion to develop the skills necessary for making our work environments welcoming and inclusive for all.

Please join us for a one-hour special small group discussion to explore the concept of speaking up in the face of disrespect of yourself and others using a case study approach --- From bystander to upstander: dealing with incivility and microaggressions at school/work and beyond.

You will get the most out of the small group discussion if you first watch the NIH webinar on bystander training – but if you cannot, join us anyway and watch the webinar later.

We hope you join us as we explore how to better support ourselves and each other in the face of disrespect, incivility and microaggressions, especially during these trying times.

TB scientist: "I spend my days in the lab — or at least I used to — wearing a T-shirt and mask ... or, as we call it these days, "Business Casual" ... trying to find the best way to kill TB germs.
