Kudos to ... 2020 White Coat Grady Honorees

In a different reality we would have all gathered on June 6 at the Georgia Aquarium to honor CFAR members who were being recognized at the 10th Annual White Coat Grady Gala.

In the reality we actually live in though the Gala was COVID-cancelled so join us now in a virtual round of thundering applause. YAAAAAAYYYY Y'ALL!!!!

The NIH R56 mechanism provides limited interim research support based on the merit of a pending R01 application while an applicant gathers data needed to revise a new or competing renewal application. R56 awards are restricted to highly meritorious applications that would be missed opportunities if not funded.

Mirko Paiardini and Mike Lederman (Case Western Reserve CFAR) just received R56 funding for "MOBILIZING HOST DEFENSES TO LYMPHOID SITES OF HIV PERSISTENCE TO INDUCE REMISSION"

In order to get COVID-19 research funding into investigators hands as quickly as possible, the NIH has been issuing a slew of Notices of Special Interest (NOSI) that will allow investigators to apply for an administrative supplement to a current NIH award, even if the main award has nothing to do with SARS-CoV-2.

For example, Aaron Siegler and Patrick Sullivan have just received an administrative supplement for "POPULATION-BASED SURVEY OF SARS-COV-2 INFECTION AND IMMUNE RESPONSE" (R01AI143875-02S1) that is attached to their HIV R01 to integrate a combination HIV prevention intervention into a widely-used geosocial app for Chinese men (R01AI143875).

Interested in applying for a COVID supplement that would be attached to one of your current NIH grants?

Workshop: Community Engagement for STEM Fields

     Mentoring Moment...

Thursday, June 25, 2:30 - 4:00

"The CFDE Engaged Learning Program, in partnership with Science ATL, will offer a workshop on best practices of community engagement and related "broader impacts" activities for STEM faculty and students. This workshop is designed to give members of science labs and other science academicians tools for engaging with community partners, especially partners in Atlanta. If your laboratory is already engaged in outreach, this workshop can help laboratory members think more effectively about their outreach activities. Facilitated by Vialla Hartfield-Méndez, the workshop will also feature Sarah Peterson, Co-Founder and Director of New Initiatives at Science ATL and Carol Clark, Senior Science Communicator in Emory's Office of Communications.."

"This workshop is open to faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students and post-docs in STEM fields. We invite participation by multiple members of science labs. Participation in this workshop can be included in descriptions of broader impacts in national grant applications; or if your lab group currently does outreach related to a grant project, participation in this workshop could be mentioned in your reporting on that project."

A funny and poignant exploration of making one's way through the world as a Black queer man living with HIV.

This just in from CFARian Justin Smith
"I'm helping to organize a free virtual staged reading of the play "one in two." Given the subject matter of the show, the fact that it is Pride Month, and that Saturday is National HIV Testing Day, I think this event will be of great interest to Emory CFAR members."
