It is with enormous pride that we announce that today (July 1, 2020) CFAR PI Carlos del Rio began a 4-year term as the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Foreign Secretary!!!

In this highly prestigious role Carlos will serve as a senior adviser on international matters to the NAM president and Governing Council and as liaison to global academies of medicine and science.

As @CarlosdelRio7 tweeted earlier today: "I am looking forward to be serving the NAM in this capacity, in particular at this time when the US position as a leader in Global Health is being diminished."

... to Rama Amara and Methul Suthar for adapting the science behind Rama's experimental MVA-based HIV vaccine (R01AI148378) (which, BTW, has successfully completed phase 2 clinical trials in the United States) for use in SARS-CoV-2.

Their studies have shown that a single MVA vaccination can provide protection against multiple viral infections, including Zika, Ebola, and the original SARS, making it an excellent platform for use in developing a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.

They recently received a two year supplement to Rama's AIDS grant to use in developing an MVA-based vaccine for SARS-CoV-2.

Imagine a world in which a group of people suffer a disproportionate burden of HIV and mental health issues AND face more barriers to care for both.

As it turns out, you don't need to imagine it -- that is the lived reality for many young Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.

To address this glaring health disparity Sophia Hussen has new R34 funding (R34MH124638) to use an implementation science approach for investigating how we can streamline and enhance mental health services based in Ryan White HIV clinics to better support YB-GBMSM.

"Enhancing Integration of HIV and Mental Health Services for Young Black Gay, Bisexual and Other MSM" is a direct result of funding Sophia received from the CFAR. Emory-based Co-Is include Mo Ali, Ameeta Kalokhe, Gene Farber, and Traci Leong.

Mentoring Moment...
NIH Instructs Peer Reviewers Not To Speculate on COVID-19 Impact

     Mentoring Moment...

From NIAID Funding News:

"You may be concerned that closures and restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic will undermine aspects of a research project grant application that you plan to submit or have already submitted, hurting your application's overall impact score as a result."

"Know that NIH issued new instructions for peer reviewers that state, "Assume that issues resulting from the coronavirus pandemic will be resolved prior to award, and [do] not allow concerns about temporary, emergency situations to affect [overall impact] scores." In other words, reviewers will not forecast how the ongoing emergency might disrupt your research proposal when scoring your application."

"You can read the guidance at Coronavirus Update: Guidance for NIH Peer Reviewers. It includes examples of concerns that peer reviewers should disregard when scoring, such as recruitment and inclusion plans being delayed by patient populations' being affected by the virus. The update also notes NIH will accept post-submission materials up to 14 days before a review meeting for the duration of the pandemic."

Community Corner...
Emory's COVID-19 Community Outreach and Health Disparities Initiative

Community Corner

Are you interested in participating in Emory's COVID-19 Community Outreach and Health Disparities Initiative?

Emory has long recognized that there are disparities in health care access and patient outcomes associated with factors such as race, gender, sexual orientation, primary language, and socioeconomic status.

And as COVID19 sweeps across our communities, we are acutely aware that there is a disproportionate impact from the virus on African American, LatinX, and rural communities.

The University is now interested in engaging community leaders from faith-based, civic and health sector organizations to work with Emory to develop tailored approaches and mobilize support within the context of the communities' cultural and individual needs to reduce the burden of COVID19.

If you are interested in helping us, please take this brief survey.

It will help us identify your concerns, ideas and perspective as we work towards designing and implementing methods to effective reach communities vulnerable to COVID-19 and other chronic illnesses. We will use the information you provide to help determine your engagement level and somewhat related, time commitment.

Again, we recognize that engagement with you is what will make Emory successful in reducing health disparities and promoting health equity. We are grateful for your time, interest and valuable perspectives. Stay safe, be well, and wash those hands.

With kind regards,
Nicole M. Franks, MD, FACEP
Chief Quality Officer, Emory University Hospital Midtown
Co-chair of the Emory Collaborative Community Outreach and Health Disparities Initiative
