Kudos ...

     Will Cantara
     Will Cantara

... to NIH for awarding William Cantara (@ribo_doc) and Ashwanth Francis (@AshwanthFrancis) their first ever NIH funding!

We've all seen cartoon videos depicting how HIV replicates but it turns out that we don't actually know a lot about HOW genomic RNA structure and interactions with host RNAs contribute to HIV-1 replication in living cells. Will Cantera, an Assistant Professor in the Sarafianos Lab, is on the job. He will use his first NIH funding -- REVEALING THE RNA-RNA INTERACTOME OF THE HIV-1 GENOME -- to provide a more complete picture of the multifaceted roles that viral RNA plays in the HIV-1 lifecycle.

Mounting evidence suggests a dominant role for the capsid protein (CA) to target HIV-1 pre-integration complexes (PICs) to distinct nuclear location of viral integration. Ashwanth Francis will use his first NIH funding to look at DELINEATING A ROLE FOR CA IN HIV-1 NUCLEAR TRANSPORT TO SITES OF INTEGRATION.

Understanding the localization of CA to nuclear PICs and how this influences HIV-1 transport to different locations of viral DNA integration will provide valuable insights that will potentially guide future drug development efforts targeting virus nuclear transport.

In Other Exciting News ....

     Kehmia Titanji
     Kehmia Titanji

People living with HIV are more susceptible to potentially fatal complications from influenza, strep, and meningitis, perhaps because the B cells needed to mount an antibody response to these bad bugs are severely damaged by HIV and antiretrovirals do not completely restore B cell function.

Kehmia Titanji has new R03 funding for ENHANCING B CELL MATURATION AND FUNCTION USING BISPHOSPHONATES IN HIV. This project will be used to investigate a novel approach to improve B cell function and antibody production in PLWH, using a class of drug more typically tasked with treating osteoporosis but which ALSO show exciting promise as a potential adjuvant for boosting B cell function and antibody production in PLWH.
