Study Description: This project studies transmission of M. tuberculosis in relational social networks in an African urban setting. By comparing the prevalence of M. tuberculosis infection and disease among social network contacts of TB cases and community controls, this study can infer secondary attack rates within the network and estimate population attributable risks of infection. It also uses molecular epidemiology to infer the patterns of spread of tuberculosis through the social networks in the community. With better understanding of this local epidemiology, tuberculosis control programs can design and implement tailored interventions to control disease.
